The Rapid Class Breakdown

How we categorize river challenges:

Rivers are graded from Class I (easiest) to Class V (most extreme). On our trips:

  • Class I (Big Thompson calm sections): Tiny ripples perfect for young kids or relaxation.

  • Class II (Colorado River stretches): Small waves with clear channels—ideal for first-timers.

  • Class III (Poudre’s Pineview Falls): Exciting whitewater requiring some maneuvering, great for thrill-curious paddlers.

  • Class IV (Poudre’s Mishawaka Gorge): Intense drops needing precise moves, reserved for experienced rafters.

  • Class V (Upper Arkansas): Extreme rapids we don’t run—only for experts with scout-first strategies.

How Water Levels Change the Game

Spring Snowmelt (May-June)
